About This Calculator

Building a deck involves coordinating lumber for decking boards, joists, beams, posts, and hardware like screws and brackets. Underestimating materials leads to project delays, while overordering wastes money on expensive pressure-treated or composite lumber. This calculator generates a comprehensive materials list based on your deck dimensions, board size, and joist spacing preferences.

Quick Tips

  • 1 Standard deck boards are 5.5 inches wide with a 1/8-inch gap between them.
  • 2 Deck joists should be spaced 16 inches on center for residential builds.
  • 3 Add 15% waste factor for diagonal board patterns versus parallel layouts.

Example Calculation

Scenario

A 16ft x 12ft deck with 5.5-inch composite boards, 1/8-inch gaps.

Result

Area: 192 sq ft | Boards: 26 across width | Joists (16" OC): 10 | Posts: 9 minimum

How to Calculate Deck Materials

Start with the total square footage (length x width). For decking boards, divide the deck width by the board width (in feet) to get the number of rows, then multiply by the deck length for total linear feet. Joists run perpendicular to decking boards at 16-inch spacing. Posts are placed every 6-8 feet along the beam.

Choosing Deck Board Sizes

Standard deck boards are 5.5 inches wide (actual dimension of a 2x6). Composite boards come in 5.5-inch and 7.25-inch widths. Board thickness is typically 1 inch (5/4 decking) or 1.5 inches (2x lumber). Add 10-15% waste factor for cuts, especially for diagonal or picture-frame patterns.
