About This Calculator
Roofing materials are sold in squares, where one square covers 100 square feet, and accurate estimation prevents costly shortages or expensive surplus. This calculator factors in roof pitch, which increases the actual surface area beyond the flat footprint, along with waste percentages for cuts around hips, valleys, and edges. It outputs the number of squares, bundles of shingles, rolls of underlayment, and ridge cap pieces your project requires.
Quick Tips
- 1 One roofing square equals 100 sq ft; a typical home needs 20-25 squares.
- 2 Multiply your floor area by your roof pitch factor to get true roof area.
- 3 Add 15% waste factor for hip roofs versus 10% for simple gable roofs.
Example Calculation
A gable roof over 40ft x 30ft house with 6/12 pitch.
Roof area: 1,789 sq ft | 18 squares needed | Pitch factor: 1.118 | Bundles (3-tab): 54
How Roof Area Is Calculated
Roof area accounts for the pitch (slope) of the roof. A flat roof area equals length times width, but a pitched roof has more surface area. The pitch multiplier is calculated from the rise-over-run ratio, increasing the area proportionally.
Understanding Roofing Squares
A roofing square equals 100 square feet. It is the standard unit for ordering roofing materials. Divide the total roof area by 100 to get the number of squares. Each square typically requires 3 bundles of standard three-tab shingles.
Roof Pitch and Its Impact
Roof pitch is expressed as rise over run. A 4/12 pitch means the roof rises 4 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. Steeper pitches increase roof area and material costs but provide better water drainage and snow shedding.
Material Estimation Tips
Always add 10% to 15% to your material estimate for waste from cuts, ridges, valleys, and starter strips. Complex roof shapes with many valleys and hips generate more waste than simple gable roofs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Standard three-tab shingles require 3 bundles per roofing square (100 sq ft). Architectural or dimensional shingles may require 4 to 5 bundles per square depending on the brand. The calculator uses 3 bundles per square as the standard.
A 4/12 to 6/12 pitch is most common for residential homes. Steeper pitches (8/12 to 12/12) are used for aesthetic appeal and in snowy climates. Low-slope roofs (below 3/12) require special materials like rolled roofing or membrane systems.
Place a level horizontally against the roof and measure 12 inches along it. Then measure vertically from the 12-inch mark down to the roof surface. That vertical measurement is the rise, giving you the pitch ratio.
The calculator provides the base material requirement. Add 10% for a simple gable roof, 15% for a hip roof, and up to 20% for complex roofs with many valleys, dormers, or irregular shapes.
