Your numbers
Your current grade should reflect everything completed except the final. The weight is the final's share of the whole course grade, from your syllabus.

Final grades, explained
How the Final Grade Formula Works
The formula solves for the score you need on your final exam to reach a target overall grade: Required = (Target - Current x (1 - Weight)) / Weight, where Weight is the final exam's share of your grade as a decimal. Plug in your numbers and the calculator returns the exact percentage you need. The math accounts for what you have already earned and weighs only what the final can change.
Reading the Result Correctly
A number between 0 and 100 means you can mathematically hit your target, but the realistic difficulty depends on your usual test performance. A result above 100% means the target is impossible from your current grade. A negative result means you already secured the target and even a zero on the final keeps you there.
Strategy Based on the Result
If you need above 90%, prioritize the final and study heavily for two weeks. If you need 70-90%, normal study habits should work. If you need under 70%, you can spend the time on other classes that need more attention. Use the calculator at multiple targets (B, B+, A-) to understand the full range of outcomes.
Extra Credit and Curve Adjustments
This calculator assumes a straight weighted average with no curve. If your professor curves grades or offers extra credit, those modify the math. Add expected extra credit to your current grade first, then run the calculator on the adjusted number to see what the final still demands.
Common questions
Where do I find the final exam weight?
Check the syllabus. Most syllabi list percentage breakdowns for assignments, midterms, and the final. If the final is listed as 25% of the overall grade, enter 25.
What if my class has multiple weighted categories?
Enter your current grade as it stands across all completed categories. Then enter only the final exam's percentage weight. The calculator solves for the final correctly because your current grade already reflects everything except the final.
Why is my result over 100%?
It means your target grade is mathematically unreachable from your current grade given the final's weight. You will need to revise the target down, ask about extra credit, or accept a lower outcome.
Why is my result negative?
You have already secured the target grade. Even a zero on the final would still leave your overall grade at or above the target.
Does this work for plus/minus grading?
Yes, the calculator works with percentages. Convert your target letter grade to its percentage threshold (A- = 90, B+ = 87, etc.) and use that as the target.
