Grading, explained
Standard US Letter Grade Scale
Most US schools use: 93-100 A, 90-92 A-, 87-89 B+, 83-86 B, 80-82 B-, 77-79 C+, 73-76 C, 70-72 C-, 67-69 D+, 60-66 D, below 60 F. Some instructors or schools use slightly different cutoffs (e.g., 65% as passing instead of 60%). Check your syllabus for the exact scale.
Percentage vs Letter Grade
The percentage is your raw score on the test. The letter grade is the categorical version that maps to GPA. A 91% is 'A-' on the standard scale and worth 3.7 quality points per credit when computing GPA. Two students with 91% and 99% both get an A- in GPA terms, even though one scored 8 points higher.
What 'Passing' Means at Different Schools
K-12: typically 60% is passing (D-). College: many programs require 70% (C-) for credit toward the major. Graduate programs often require 80% (B-) or higher to maintain good standing. Pass/fail courses usually require 60-70% to pass, depending on institution.
Improving Future Test Scores
Identify what category of question you missed (computation errors, conceptual gaps, careless mistakes). Practice the weakest area before the next exam. Studying recent tests is one of the highest-yield review activities because it shows exactly what the instructor emphasizes.
Common questions
My school uses 65% as passing, does that change the scale?
It shifts the F threshold up but does not change the A/B/C cutoffs at most schools. Check your syllabus for the exact mapping if you are near a borderline grade.
Why is 90% an A- instead of an A?
The standard plus/minus scale puts A at 93+ and A- at 90-92. Some schools use a simpler scale where 90+ is just A, check your school's official conversion.
How is a curved grade different?
On a curved test, your raw score is adjusted upward (or sometimes downward) based on the class distribution. The letter grade is assigned by where you fall in the curve, not by absolute percentage.
Can I use this for weighted question values?
If questions have different point values, enter the total points earned and total points possible, the calculator treats it as a ratio either way.
Does the score include any partial credit?
Yes, the calculator only cares about your total correct answers (or points earned) over the maximum. Partial credit is already baked into that ratio.
